TBIRD Sets New Record of 200 Gbps in Space Communication

Category Engineering

tldr

NASA's golden, tissue box-sized satellite, TBIRD, has set a new record for the fastest data transfer rate ever performed in space. The recent test of the system demonstrated a 200 Gbps, space-to-ground optical link speed, doubling the transfer rate record set by itself from last year. This new ultra-high-speed capability is capable of transmitting a great deal more information than traditional space communication systems, and will enable the science discoveries of the future.

Challenge to Nature - Growing and Observing Embryonic Development in the Lab

Category Science

tldr

Independent teams of researchers have been able to advance their success in growing monkey embryos in the lab whereby they were able to witness the growth and development of vital organs, cells, and tissues under a microscope. This breakthrough in embryo research opens new doors to understanding the formation of organs in three dimensions. However, the development was only allowed up to day 25 where the embryos need to be implanted in the uterus for further growth and survivability.

CDA Warns of Contaminated Eye Drops Linked to Corneal Ulcer

Category Health

tldr

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned people against using EzriCare eye drops in February 2023. Researchers have detailed a case of a 72-year-old female diagnosed with a corneal ulcer, caused by irreparable infection of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa traced to the contaminated eye drops. Treatment was difficult as the isolate was resistant to any antibiotics that could be administered and instead had to be infused intravenously for 8 weeks for the infection to clear. The eye drops have since been pulled from shelves, but the risk may still persist.

Unravelling the Mystery of Strong Interactions through Lattice QCD Calculations

Category Physics

tldr

In a recent publication in Physical Review Letters, physicists provided evidence for the existence of a deeply bound dibaryon, a composite subatomic particle, made of two triply bottom Omega (Ωbbb) baryons entirely of bottom (beauty) quarks. With its greater binding energy than the deuteron, the newly proposed dibaryon (D6b) is the most strongly bound beautiful dibaryon in our visible universe. It elucidates the features of strong forces and motivates the search for heavier exotic particles. Lattice QCD calculations based on a fundamental theory and high-performance computing are being used to solve the mystery of strong interactions.

A research team from Tianjin University published a new research about team-knowledge distillation networks (TKD-Net) for cross-domain few-shot learning (CD-FSL). The proposed method consists of two stages: a teacher development stage and a multi-level knowledge distillation stage. After obtaining multiple domain-specific teacher models, multi-level knowledge is then transferred from the cooperation of teachers to the student in the paradigm of meta-learning.

According to a new study, the end of the last ice age that began roughly 15,000 years ago was influenced by the arrival of warm and super salty water from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists from St Andrews and Cardiff Universities reconstructed the ocean temperature and salinity of the ice age cycle over a period of 1.5 million years and analyzed fossil shells from 40-meter-long core of deep-sea mud for chemical fingerprints to come to this conclusion.
