Exploring the Universe and Beyond - This Week @NASA
Category Space Monday - May 8 2023, 13:03 UTC - 1 year ago This week, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and the Czech Republic’s foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, signed the Artemis Accords, a document which seeks to aid cooperation between countries in space exploration. Additionally, the CHAPEA habitat was built to provide a Mars-like environment on Earth, and the James Webb Telescope detected hints of water vapor while observing a rocky planet outside of our solar system. Finally, to celebrate Black Hole Week, NASA released new animations, educational resources, and other materials about the significance of black holes.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and the Czech Republic’s foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, recently participated in the signing ceremony at NASA Headquarters to sign the Artemis Accords. The Artemis Accords helps to guide cooperation between nations as they take part in exploration with the NASA’s Artemis program.

NASA also finished building their Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, or CHAPEA habitat. It is the first Mars-like habitat here on Earth and will help to prepare for future human exploration of the planet. This summer, several volunteers will start a yearlong analog mission to test the habitat and its capabilities.

Outside of our solar system, the James Webb Space Telescope detected hints of water vapor while observing GJ 486 b. While it is too close to its star to potentially have liquid water, the discovery of water vapor may hint at the possibility of an atmosphere around the rocky planet.

In addition to making new discoveries in space, NASA also celebrated Black Hole Week. With animations, educational resources, and other materials, the week highlighted the significance of black holes in the field of astrophysics, and the mysteries that still surround them.
